Love this discussion.
My son HAS cerebral palsy, diagnosed at 1, and autism, diagnosed at 5. He is neither a cerebral palsy child nor is he autistic. He is a boy, a son, a brother, a grandson, a nephew, a friend...his cp and autism are conditions, they do not define him :).

First person self identity is such a normal, albiet damaging, part of the way we communicate as a society. We rarely tell people that we WORK at our professions; instead, we verbalize that we actually ARE our job. (I'm an Optician, I'm a Teacher, etc) We also do this for some disorders and illnesses. (I'm Diabetic, I'm Autistic, I'm schizophrenic, etc )

I personally believe that it can be damaging to a person's psyche and self esteem to be continually told what they ARE, especially if what they "ARE" has a negative connotation within society.

People are all so varied and diverse in the way that they want to be seen and in how they view themselves that there is no, "catch all" solution to this issue, but I think we need to examine the way we verbalise our interpretations of self, as a society, and be mindful when we label any other human being. (First person, second person, or otherwise...)

“ In this day and age, we tend to categorize and label, and I think labels are for food. Canned food.”

I have been battling with myself regarding this one for a long time. Here is another spin on terminology...I am diabetic. People know who I am...Erin... and I have never felt affronted when people have said that I am diabetic. Yes it's a condition I have but not once in my 381/2 years of having diabetes have I ever been called, "that diabetic girl", or the like - I have always been identified as Erin. Isn't that how we all identify people; by their name first? When I talk about my sons I never say, "my autistic sons" or "my sons with autism" for that matter; I simply refer to them as, "my sons Thomas and Jordan".

Today we had a G-R-E-A-T day presenting at MacKenzie Towne School ! The kids really loved the show and had wonderful things to tell us after wards ! For example: " You know, I really liked that Roger made a new friend and he did not give up even if it was not easy at the beginning !" " He got some good tips from his teachers.....is that Dog (Mr Fregus) REALLY a teacher at the school ? Wow !" And M-C got a chance to play Mz Pillar who was rolling her"Rs" in that "oh-so french" way.......she made Erin (Aka Roger) laugh when she invented a new word too ! (Sure+Swell= SCHWELL !)
